Another Fiesta Prize Ribbon

We have an annual event in our town called the Apricot Fiesta. It's a ton of fun and the whole town gets together for a lot of local entertainment, food, games, parade, fireworks, booths, rides, drinking, an arts and crafts show and so much more!

I've entered the show multiple times and have been fortunate to win a ribbon on all my entries. Well this year didn't disappoint.

I love this picture I took while in Morro Bay. I was a little disappointed that I didn't place but when I saw the ones that did, I was ok with it. LOL

If you live in CA, have you been to Morro Bay? It's crazy, you drive into town and all of a sudden this huge rock is in your face. We're a ways away from the rock, but you can see how it's sorta magical. Wow, it's worth it if you can get there.

This layout finishes the Fiesta photos for 2022.  I wanted to use the same papers as the other layout and flaps so I continued with the red & teal color scheme. Honestly, it probably wouldn't have been my first choice, but the bright colors coordinate even though they are not the same.

Fiesta Parade Layout Using Flip Flaps

Parades are so fun and of course we take lots of photos but how do we incorporate all the photos onto one layout? Flip Flaps!!

I was able to get 13 photos on this one 12x12 layout because I used an 8x12, 4x4 and 3x4 flaps!

The paperline I used is an older Stampin Up! line that is circus theme. I used my Cricut for the title letters and the Print/Cut embellishment, journaling strips for the journaling and sticker labels to add some more journaling to the photos.

TGIF; Thankful Friday #225

Happy Friday and Happy Thankful Friday! I've been doing this post for over four years! It's good to reflect each week and acknowledge what you are thankful for. I hope you have been doing that right along with me.

This has been a week! First I want to let you know that I won two ribbons this weekend at our local Apricot Fiesta. First Place for the Zion photo and Second for the cow canvas. I am pretty excited about that!

But this week I'm mostly thankful for my family. It's nice that we have someone to depend on when things are good and bad. There are so many people out there that do not have this luxury and we are blessed.

I hope you had a great week - enjoy the hotter weather and if you're lucky, some Summer Vacation time!

TGIF; Thankful Friday #224

Happy Thankful Friday! This week I'm thankful for the weather. It's been beautiful this week. Not too breezy and not too hot. I know that will all change soon, but right now, I'm enjoying it.

This weekend is the annual Apricot Fiesta event in our town. It should be perfect weather for the weekend. I'm sure we'll all say it's hot, but it'll only get up to the mid 80's.

I am entering a painted canvas and a photo of Zion National Park that is postcard perfect in the Art & Craft Contest. I love doing this - it's so fun!

2016 Fiesta Entries

I skipped a year, but decided to enter a couple of pieces this year.  The first one is a mixed media piece featuring Lila Grey's daisy Flower of the Month and the second was in photography.  Anyone who knows me, knows I am one of the worst photographers, but I took a great photo of the Grand Tetons from the Elk Reserve in Jacksonhole Wyoming.  I love this photo so I decided to take a chance and enter it.

Third Place for the mixed media piece and Honorable Mention for the photo.  

At first I thought, ok, honorable mention is the same as "participant", but then realized that not every piece entered had a ribbon.  So, yes it really is a Honorary Mention and something to be proud of!  So, even though it wasn't a First Place, I'm still 3 for 3 on my Fiesta entries.

Now I need to custom frame the photo and display it proudly.

America the Beautiful

What happens when your office is getting rid of old framed art?  I get to upcycle!  This piece was an old 80's print...very dated and not pretty.  I adhered scrap pieces of blue papers randomly around the piece.  Then painted a layer of gesso.  From there I just did a little this and that to get to something I liked.

In the meantime, I used other scrap papers to cut out each state.  I found a state puzzle on Pinterest and used those to put the U.S. all together.  Inked each state and then the entire U.S.  

I made more changes to the background (added more blue) and finger-painted a border around the U.S. with white paint.

After putting the frame on, I decided to hang this up in my bathroom...yes, I said bathroom.  Lol

It adds so much color in there!

I labeled this Apricot Fiesta because I'm considering this as my Fiesta contribution to the Art/Crafts Exhibit.  I didn't participate last year and I'm thinking about doing it again this year.  I'll keep y'all updated.

Fiesta Moments 2015

It was fun actually scrapbooking this past weekend.  I have so many pictures to scrapbook and I feel like I'm so behind.

Here's my take on it:

LOVE all the paper layers.  I was browsing through this website's DT and I just love Kris Berc's style.  Check out her blog HERE.  I love how she has only one or two photos but tons of layers of paper.  Using patterned paper scares me.  But I remember I took a class years ago and the instructor's tip was to treat patterned paper as if it's a solid.  Look at the color and density of the design versus just thinking of it as patterned paper.  Also, if you use papers from the same kit, they are designed to work together. 


At first I wanted to grab all the orange and blue paper I could find, but I didn't have much orange and the orange I had didn't feel right.  So I went to blue.  I have a paper pad that I received for my birthday a few years ago.  The blue was just right.  Once I selected that sheet, the rest just fell into place. 


The man/woman embellishment and heart border came from the Artbooking Cricut Cartridge.

A Little Whimsy

Although I haven't posted in awhile, I have been busy in the command center.  This project I did on Sunday.  Do you remember the canvas I painted during that Canvas and Cabernet event for my sister's birthday?  Well, I knew I didn't like it and I knew I'd eventually paint over it.  So I did...and here it is:

First I applied gesso on top of the original painting.  After that, I cut out and applied seven book page circles.  At that point, I painted blue around the circles for the sky and green on the bottom.  The rest are just an assortment of acrylic paint, water color pens, metal markers, black and white ink, etc.  I really didn't have any kind of idea what i was going to do until I did it.  Take a closer look, I did all kinds of crazy things.

I haven't decided yet, but this may be my Apricot Fiesta entry this year.  This is a mixed media piece.

Another First Place Ribbon

I got another ribbon!  First Place in the "other" division.  They have different divisions for the different age groups - drawing, painting, and other

So now I'm 2 for 2.  I realized there's a "Best of Show" ribbon...challenge accepted!  I've got to figure out what to do for next year...

Apricot Fiesta 2014 Entries

Here are some photos of the 3D She Art Mixed Media piece that I finished:

The front and back of the "book" I just did some random painting, masking, misting, stamping, decopauging, etc.  So fun!!

For the insides, I did similiar mixed media techniques and then some.  Added some fiber (string), washi tape, more and more layering, rolled flowers, and of course, my pieced "she".  I love how it turned out and I love how unlimited mixed media art is.  It's messy and random and everything cool about being an artist!

I added a feather, stick pin, metal piece, rolled flowers and other layers to the bottom right hand corner.  Carly thought the upper left corner on the opposite side then looked unbalanced.  That's when I added the random yellow thread and some yellow paint drippings.  FUN!

She Art

I've been wanting to create a "She Art" mixed media piece for awhile but just didn't know exactly what I wanted to do.  I saved this cardboard box that my iPad keyboard came in and decided to Upcycle it into a mixed media piece.

Of course I didn't take a photo before I started...dang it!  I always remember after I start, but here's some that are pretty early in the upcycle stage:

Layout Challenge

I finally did a layout with my Apricot Fiesta photos of the canvas that I won the ribbon for.  I followed this sketch on Let's Scrap:

and came up with this layout:

I know it's a little busy, but I wanted to include some of the flowers that I used for the canvas and a "using scraps" kinda feel.

I Won a Ribbon!

The Apricot Fiesta was this weekend and I submitted my canvas heart in the Art Show.  Guess what???  I won a First Place ribbon in the mixed media group!!  Pretty cool!

When I went to pick it up about an hour ago, the Art Show organizer asked me if it was for sale.  Geez...I never gave that any thought so I looked over at Kenny.  He just shrugged his shoulders so I said sure.  Then I had to come up with a price and I hate that part.  Where was Carly (aka my manager and daughter) when I needed her?  I didn't know what to say, so I said $40.  Hey, hey, hey, I just made $40 bucks!  She's calling me tomorrow so we can get together.  So I decided I didn't want to sell after all.  I'm sort of proud of myself and want to keep this one in the Command Center.  Right now, it's back in my cubicle at work...ribbon and all !!

UGH!  That's me after 2 1/2 days of nonstop eating and 2 days of drinking in the sun.  Now, I'll join Kenny for a nap.  He's been snoring on the couch for at least 45 minutes now.


By the way, this year's Fiesta was one of the best in a long time.  We hung out all day yesterday with our buddies, Rosemary and Albert and laughed all day long.  And the fireworks display was outstanding!

Apricot Fiesta

Every year our town hosts the Apricot Fiesta and it's a huge event for our town.  Besides the normal food booths, arts & craft vendors, music, etc., we also have an arm wrestling tournament, horseshoe tournament, hot air balloons, basketball tourney, a parade, Little Miss and Mr Apricot and the biggest excitement...Miss Patterson competition. There's also bridge tourneys, a baking contest and art contest.  I'm sure I'm missing some things, but as you can see there's plenty to do during the first weekend in June every year.

Ok, hold on, I'm getting to my point...I've decided to enter my canvas in the art contest.  I've never done anything like this before so I'm not expecting much, but I thought it'd be pretty cool to have something I've done in their gallery.

Submissions are the week prior to the Fiesta so hopefully I remember to submit it.  I'll have that much time to name my piece.

I'll fill you in when the time comes.
